Wagner Falls

Location: Junction of M-28 and M-94 - Munising, Michigan

Wagner Falls Scenic Site is located just 1.5 miles south of Munising. A 0.2 mile forested walk leads from the parking area along a hard-packed gravel/boadwalk trail to the observation platform overlooking Wagner Falls. A short staircase leads up to the platform. Leashed pets allowed. There is no drinking water or bathroom at the site. The parking lot is generally plowed in winter and accessible by most vehicles. This is a particularly stunning waterfall in winter, popular with local artists and photographers.

Walk the paved 800-foot trail up a cool shaded canyon along Munising Creek to the base of the falls. Two sets of stairs lead to platforms for additional views of the 50-foot waterfall as it drops over a sandstone cliff. Watch for ferns, wildflowers, and an occasional mink. In winter, the waterfall exhibits dramatic ice formations. One of the few areas of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore easy to access in winter, with plowed roads and parking lot.

One of three waterfalls that surround the City of Owen Sound, Inglis Falls is the best known and most visited. Situated in the heart of the 200-hectare Inglis Falls Conservation Area, Inglis Falls is an 18 meter high cascade, created by the Sydenham River meeting the edge of the Niagara Escarpment. The erosive power of the water has carved a deep gorge at the base of the falls. On a clear day you can see down the valley into the City of Owen Sound and out to the Owen Sound harbor.

Location: trailheads on County Roads 440 & 437, and Forest Road 2258 approximately 30 miles northwest of Manistique in Schoolcraft County

Pine Marten run is a 26 mile system of hiking and horseback riding trails located in the Ironjaw Semi-Primitive Area within the Hiawatha National Forest. Parking areas are available at each trailhead. And Adirondack shelters, with fire rings, have been constructed at Rim Lake, Rumble Lake and along the Indian River. Water and toilet facilities are available at the County Road 440 trailhead, while the others only have toilet facilities. The trail system has five designated loops. Trail loops are shorter routes that start and end in the same location.

Palms Book State Park, located at the north end of Indian Lake in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, is home to Kitch-iti-kipi or "The Big Spring." Palms Book is a rewarding side trip for the vacationer touring the Upper Peninsula, for here can be seen one of Michigan's alluring natural attractions -- Kitch-iti-kipi, The Big Spring. Two hundred feet across, the 40-foot deep Kitch-iti-kipi is Michigan's largest freshwater spring. Over 10,000 gallons a minute gush from fissures in the underlying limestone. The flow continues throughout the year at a constant 45 degree Fahrenheit. By means of a self-operated observation raft, visitors are guided to vantage points overlooking fascinating underwater features and fantasies. Ancient tree trunks, lime-encrusted branches and fat trout appear suspended in nothingness as they slip through crystal waters far below. Clouds of sand kept in constant motion by gushing waters create ever-changing shapes and forms, a challenge to the imagination of young and old alike.

Whatever your preference for outdoor activities in the wintertime, come to Ogemaw County and enjoy the best that nature has to offer. Snowmobilers will find 95 miles of some of the finest groomed trails in Michigan. Easy access to snowmobile trails is one of the many pluses you will find in Ogemaw County. Check with your hotel for the easiest route to any of the trails in the system. Current snow and ski conditions reports are available 24 hours a day at (800) 755-9091 during the winter season.
