Colpoys Bay

The beautiful view from Colpoy's Bay Conservation Area especially on a sunny day with the sunlight sparkling on the waves and the deep blue of the bay belies many of the secrets and ghosts that lurk beneath this idyllic scene. An Ontario Historic Plaque on this spot commemorates the Wreck of the Jane Miller, a wooden steamer supplying freight and delivering passengers to small communities along Georgian Bay. She was heavily loaded on one of her last trips of the season on November 25, 1881 and left Wiarton, then stopped to load wood at Big Bay and then disappeared in the night during a snow storm, with a loss of 30 lives. Why the Jane Miller went down remains a mystery to this day.
